The abrupt change in work modality and the keys to achieving it.

The "teleworking" modality is a new concept for many, something old for others, but without a doubt, a way of working that, when implemented, had its complications in public and private institutions.

The measure taken by companies was mandatory due to the health emergency caused by COVID-19. However, there are Ecuadorian companies—a few, admittedly—that had already implemented this concept or intended to do so. Now there's no other option; work can be done from home, and this crisis has proven it. The global pandemic hasn't only brought negative aspects; positive ones can also be found in this scenario, such as the opportunities for businesses after COVID-19, a topic I will address in the next post. For now, I'll focus on sharing tips for being more efficient and successfully completing work activities in this new modality.

Due to my work and professional experience, I can say that I have already been involved with this type of work arrangement. Some days a week I had to work remotely because my studies prevented me from being fully available at the company. Thanks to this experience, I can offer some recommendations that we learned along with some coworkers while teleworking.

Based on my knowledge, I can offer the following recommendations for teleworking:

  • If you have to hold virtual meetings, know how to behave, use the available features in the applications optimally, ensure that the meetings are properly coordinated, and avoid noise and interruptions as much as possible.

  • Determine a fixed workspace within the home with the best possible conditions to perform the tasks to be carried out.

  • It's very important to set schedules and stick to them punctually. Balance your schedule to attend to personal matters or family life without neglecting your work activities.

  • I would do activities between working from home and spending time with my family, for example, I would shower or exercise before going to bed.

  • Manage a list of clear and realistic tasks and objectives that allow you to track daily actions.

  • Never lose contact with colleagues and the jobs or projects they are involved in.

Based on my experience with remote work, I'm optimistic that teleworking can be implemented after COVID-19. By adhering to work discipline, we can make this alternative have a positive impact on society and improve the working environment.
